The Vocational Training Center was the first project launched by Humanity Healing Network as it expanded out the House of Compassion, which grew into Humanity Healing International, a registered 501c3 public charity.

The Vocational Training Center is comprised of two elements, the Model Farm and the Livestock Management program.  Both of these facets have grown and developed to the point that they are self-sustainable.  The cassava production on the model farm has become a showcase for the region and has received recognition from national Ugandan leaders.  Many families in the region have been gifted with high-yield cuttings to augment their food security.  The goat and cow herds have grown to the point where, in addition to supplying the dairy requirements of the 600+ children at Future Victory School, there is surplus livestock to sell or barter for other needs.  But the most important part of the program has always been the personal development of the children involved.  They have not only learned real-world skills to augment their formal education, which will stand them in good stead in the future, but through an active outreach to aid families in the region, these children have been instilled with an understanding of selfless service.  As many of the children at Future Victory School are orphaned, we believe this is the best way to integrate a sense of community and reweave them back into the fabric of society.

Please visit the other pilot program we currently have at Future Victory School: Pads for Schoolgirls.  This project aims to create vocational training modules for girls teaching seamstress skills, helps keep young women in schools through the creation of reusable sanitary pads and, most importantly, teaches selfless service through the sharing of pads the girls create with other girls to help them stay in school.

Women’s Day Say NO to Honor Killings Facebook Campaign http://humanityhealing.org/2013/03/womens-day-say-no-to-honor-killings-facebook-campaign/ http://humanityhealing.org/2013/03/womens-day-say-no-to-honor-killings-facebook-campaign/#comments Fri, 08 Mar 2013 03:10:12 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=1017 International_Womens_Day_Say_NO-to_Honor_KillingsIn January, a 22 year old Pakistani woman named Guryia from a very poor family of Garishaho Lahore, Pakistan, had acid thrown in her face by her husband, blinding her in one eye, seriously damaging the other, causing significant respiratory damage and melting her nose and much of the flesh off her face.  She was then cast out into the street to die.  As this was a domestic issue, the husband has not been charged.

In recognition of the upcoming International Women’s Day, Humanity Healing International has started a Facebook campaign asking individuals to change their profile picture on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2013, to the International Women’s Day Say NO to Honor Killings badge to show support with the intent to create international pressure to end this barbaric and dishonorable practice in Pakistan and other nations that still allow it.

In addition, Humanity Healing International has launched a petition campaign to bring social awareness about the prevalence of “Honor Killings”, “Acid-Throwing” and other forms of serious domestic abuse that are a dark undercurrent in Pakistani society.

In Pakistani culture, a woman is often defined by the male figures in her life.  In some segments of Pakistani society, a woman’s father, husband or brother may decide that she has insulted the family’s honor, often for “disobedience” of some kind that would be considered a basic right of a woman elsewhere, such as marrying someone of her own choosing; and punish her by death or by horrible disfigurement by throwing acid on her.

In many instances, these crimes are seen as “domestic issues” and, as such, the police do not wish to get involved.  In the event the crime is prosecuted, the current justice system in Pakistan is failing the victims by letting the perpetrators “off the hook” with inconclusive court-cases.

The Facebook Profile Picture drive and the Say NO to Honor Killings Petition drive are means to pressure the international community by creating an outcry loud enough not to be ignored, in order to bring international pressure to bear on the Pakistani government and judicial system.

Humanity Healing has coupled these two awareness drives with two concrete actions in Pakistan.  The first is the creation of a safe house for women and girls, called House of Hope, where women who are at risk of these crimes can find refuge while learning vocational skills so that they can live independently.  The second is the creation of a grassroots advocacy campaign to teach Pakistani women their legal rights and options.

Humanity Healing Announces Say NO to Honor Killings Campaign http://humanityhealing.org/2013/03/humanity-healing-announces-say-no-to-honor-killings-campaign/ http://humanityhealing.org/2013/03/humanity-healing-announces-say-no-to-honor-killings-campaign/#comments Sun, 03 Mar 2013 05:15:25 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=1005 Say_NO_to_Honor_Killings_Acid_Throwing In recognition of the upcoming International Women’s Day, Humanity Healing International has launched a petition campaign to bring social awareness about the prevalence of “Honor Killings”, “Acid-Throwing” and other forms of serious domestic abuse that are a dark undercurrent in Pakistani society.

In some circles, death or horrible disfigurement by throwing acid to the face are considered justified actions when a man in Pakistan decides that his wife, his sister or his daughter has maculated the honor of the family.  These are heinous crime and far too prolific in Pakistan, where “Honor Killings” and serious abuse of women and girls are everyday events. Most of the victims are defenseless women and they are tortured, grievously assaulted and many times just murdered. Poor and uneducated women must struggle daily for basic rights, recognition, and respect. They live in a culture that defines them by the male figures in their lives, even though these women are often the breadwinners for their families.

Say_NO_to_Honor_Killings_Violence_Against_Women_in_PakistanIn the absence of vigorous governmental action, the fundamentalist patriarchal society sees no need to empower their female citizens, denying them equal civil and social rights.  The current justice system in Pakistan is failing the victims by letting the perpetrators “off the hook” with inconclusive  court-cases with no concrete help, allowing the victims to continue to be harassed, threatened and being the ones to be persecuted.

This flagrant violation of the basic human right to exist and live without fear must be publicly and forcefully confronted by the international community.  The petition drive by Humanity Healing International is a means to pressure the international community by creating an outcry loud enough not to be ignored.

Humanity Healing has coupled the petition drive with two concrete actions in Pakistan.  The first is the creation of a safe house for women and girls, called House of Hope, where women who are at risk of these crimes can find refuge while learning vocational skills so that they can live independently.  The second is the creation of a grassroots advocacy campaign, Advocacy Against Honor Killings, to teach Pakistani women their legal rights and options.

Humanity Healing Announces Aid to Syrian Refugee Camp http://humanityhealing.org/2013/02/humanity-healing-announces-aid-to-syrian-refugee-camp/ http://humanityhealing.org/2013/02/humanity-healing-announces-aid-to-syrian-refugee-camp/#comments Fri, 22 Feb 2013 04:56:21 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=947 Syrian_Refugee_CampHumanity Healing International is proud to announce that it has sent a shipment of emergency blankets to the refugee camps outside of Aleppo, Syria.  The shipment is being routed through the port of Latakia, Syria.  The Syrian refugees are facing the hardship of a brutal winter, with children, the elderly and women being hit the hardest.  “The blankets are very much needed as many refugees are lacking even the most basic things”, stated Samir Jesús Gavira Estévez, who will be distributing the emergency blankets to the refugees on behalf of Humanity Healing International.

Survival_blanketEarlier this month, Humanity Healing sent a shipment of children’s and women’s gloves. “We continue to renew our commitment and pledge to be a light of Hope adding to the contingent of helping hands that work towards the eradication of Human suffering”, stated Humanity Healing International CEO Christopher Buck.

According to UNHCR data, the total number of Syrian refugees reached more than 408,000 registered in December 2012, mostly residing in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq (including Iraqi Kurdistan). The number of Syrian refugees in Turkey reached 135,519 registered; 8,852 in Iraq proper and additional 54,000 in Iraqi Kurdistan; 109,081 registered in Lebanon, with 41,712 people awaiting registration; 100,368 registered in Jordan, with 41,524 Syrians awaiting registration. There are also 12,915 people registered in Egypt as of December 30, 2012, and about at least 150,000 residing in the country. The violence that has torn the country has created almost 600,000 refugees, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as of 2013.

Humanity Healing shares their Gratitude to their generous sponsors, donors and especially their partner, the United States Grand Priory of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, through the Commandery of North Carolina, who have made this shipment possible.

“Every act of Compassion, no matter where in the world it takes place, raises each and every one of us.  The Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is proud to be working with Humanity Healing.”, stated Liane Queiroz, Commander of North Carolina.  For more information on the Hospitallers, visit SaintLazarus.co

The Power of Your Hands http://humanityhealing.org/2012/12/the-power-of-your-hands/ http://humanityhealing.org/2012/12/the-power-of-your-hands/#comments Wed, 05 Dec 2012 19:58:13 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=768 The Power of Your HandsIt takes so little to make a significant impact in the life of a child and restore Hope to those that had lost it.  For example, just $5 can feed, clothe and help educate a displaced child in Northern Uganda FOR A MONTH.

This video is a call to action, to act and change realities. Please lend a Hand to those in need of Hope so that together, we can create a better world.

Donate more if you can, but imagine how much could be accomplished if each of us just gave 5 – the power of one hand.

Humanity Healing International projects include Pads for Schoolgirls, which not only reduces the school drop-out rate for girls in Uganda due to a lack of access to feminine hygiene products, but further empowers them by teaching them a vocational trade to supplement their education.

Humanity Healing International is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Give a hand up to a child.  Give 5 this holiday.

95 Girls Learning the Skills to Help More Girls http://humanityhealing.org/2012/10/95-girls-learning-the-skills-to-help-more-girls/ http://humanityhealing.org/2012/10/95-girls-learning-the-skills-to-help-more-girls/#comments Tue, 30 Oct 2012 01:44:47 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=1022 Humanity_Healing_Pads_for_SchoolgirlsDespite a delay of a month due to the sickness of the instructor was hired for the program, the Pad Project has taken off successfully.  Currently, 95 girls in both Primary Five and Six  are participating in the tailoring lessons every evening after normal class sessions.  In addition, every weekend, the tailoring lessons start very early in the morning but in shifts due to the limited sewing machines and small size of the room.

The pilot program currently has 5 sewing machines in place.  Our next step is to shift the program to a bigger classroom and install more sewing machines so that we can teach more girls each shift.  The larger classroom has been partially constructed, but still needs to be plastered and roofed.

Local women’s groups approached the project leadership team with an overwhelming interest to participate with this Tailoring course in order to help their respective families using the new skills acquired, but at this time there is no capacity beyond the 95 girls currently enrolled.  It is part of the Project Plan to enroll local women in the program once there is sufficient capacity.

Another exciting development is that other schools in the surrounding area have also illustrated great interest in this project, both in receiving pad kits for their girls and in eventually starting similar programs.

67 Families Gifted with Cassava Cuttings http://humanityhealing.org/2012/09/67-families-gifted-with-cassava-cuttings/ http://humanityhealing.org/2012/09/67-families-gifted-with-cassava-cuttings/#comments Fri, 28 Sep 2012 00:56:18 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=671 Cassava CuttingsThe Vocational Training Project at Future Victory School, the school Humanity Healing International supports in Uganda, continues to grow.  This season, the special high-yield, extra-hardy hybrid cassava we introduced to the region has continued to produce extremely well.  There was enough yield to share cuttings for 67 new families in the area.

One of the hallmarks of Humanity Healing projects is the element of community service.  We believe that the best way to reweave individuals back into the fabric of society is through the teaching of selfless service at the community level.  This is particularly true of orphaned children.  It is through the helping of others that instills the sense of a valued place in the community that is so important to children growing into well-balanced adults that will, in turn, help others in need.

Vocational Training with GoatsAs an aside, the number of children at Future Victory School has grown from 458 to 620.  Our deep Gratitude to all for helping to make this growth possible.

The Animal Husbandry program has also seen some growth. Nine goats were sold off to buy another cow, leaving 21 goats. With the birth of a calf, we are now up to 6 cows and self-sufficient for the milk supply for the current immediate needs for the school.  This has freed up funds for other much-needed supplies.

Humanity Healing – Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus Alliance http://humanityhealing.org/2012/09/humanity-healing-hospitaller-order-of-st-lazarus-alliance/ http://humanityhealing.org/2012/09/humanity-healing-hospitaller-order-of-st-lazarus-alliance/#comments Sun, 23 Sep 2012 04:22:21 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=665 Hospitaller-Order-St-Lazarus_Humanity-Healing_TreatyHumanity Healing cofounders Christopher Buck and Liane Queiroz Legey were presented with a formal treaty with the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem at the Order’s investiture service on 15 September 2012.  The alliance formalizes Humanity Healing’s position as a preferential charity for the Order.

The Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is a chivalric organization pursuing humanitarian and philanthropic activities worldwide.  Among these is the sponsoring of orphaned children through Humanity Healing International at Future Victory School in Uganda.  Future Victory School is the site for the pilot project of the Humanity Healing’s Pads for Schoolgirls Program, which empowers girls in Sub-Saharan Africa to stay in school, teaches them vocational skill and rebuilds a sense of community in the orphaned girls by giving them the opportunity to empower other girls to stay in school.

“This is both a great honor and a great opportunity”, stated Christopher Buck, President of Humanity Healing, “To be chosen by this preeminent chivalric order to be their hands in the vineyard for philanthropic work will allow us to expand our outreaches to include more of those in need of a hand up.  This is truly a blessing”

In addition to the treaty between the organizations, Liane Queiroz Legey and Christopher Buck were awarded the rank and grade of Commander of Merit of the Commpanionate of Merit – one of the higher awards presented by the Order.  They were also presented with the President’s Call to Service Award and a Letter of Commendation from President Barack Obama in recognition for their selfless service and the work of Humanity Healing.

“When we founded Humanity Healing, we did so anonymously because we only cared about the work and not the credit,” said Liane Queiroz Legey, “but we were honored to accept on behalf of all the incredible souls that work through Humanity Healing to help raise the vibration of humanity.”

Sewing Machines Arrive At Vocational Training Center http://humanityhealing.org/2012/07/sewing-machines-arrive-at-vocational-training-center/ http://humanityhealing.org/2012/07/sewing-machines-arrive-at-vocational-training-center/#comments Tue, 17 Jul 2012 02:59:28 +0000 hhteam http://humanityhealing.org/?p=660 FVS-Sewing MachinesOur first shipment of sewing machines for the Pads for Schoolgirls Project has arrived at the Vocational Training Center at Future Victory School in Uganda.  As you can see in the pictures, the students are very excited.

In case you are wondering why these are the old style treadle type sewing machines, the answer is simple: there is no electricity at Future Victory School.  In Uganda, electricity is primarily found in the major cities and corridors, with much of the countryside doing without.

We are in process of plastering the floor of the room where we will teach the sewing classes.  We have found a seamstress instructor and she is just waiting on the floor being finished before we start the classes.

Our sincere Gratitude to all those that generously donated to Humanity Healing International to make this first shipment of sewing machines possible.  We have also received shipments of pad kits from individuals with sewing skills of their own that wanted to give of their hands as well as their hearts.  Thank you.

It continuously amazes me that something that is so taken for granted in developed countries can make such a huge impact on the life a young woman in developing countries.  In sub-Saharan Africa, lack of access to feminine hygiene products is the #1 reason that girls have to drop out of school.  Studies have shown that each additional year of schooling, a girl’s earning potential increases by 10-20%.

Empowering woman empowers communities.  The goal is to keep girls in school.  Our contribution to this goal is the Pads for Schoolgirls Project.  Thank you for being a part of this change.
